DSA Fall Art Festival

The 14th Annual DSA Fall Art Festival: Día De Los Muertos is happening Saturday, October 25th from 6–9PM at Durham School of the Arts (400 N. Duke St.)! For over a decade, our Durham community has come together to celebrate and uplift Latino culture through art, music, dance, and food. This year’s theme — “Corazón, Hogar, y Camino” (Heart, Home, and Journey) — reminds us that home lives in our stories, our memories, and the connections we share.

Pre-SAT

A few more PSAT tests have been acquired and will be made available on Monday, October 13th.  Please sign up at https://osp.osmsinc.com/p/BG108-362 as spaces are limited. Testing will occur October 21st.

Pre-ACT

Testing will be held Oct 14th on the second floor of the D building starting at 8:30. Classroom teachers will inform students of their locations. Students should come with a charged laptop and charger.

Support the PTSA

Rather than host multiple fundraisers throughout the year, we do one annual campaign. This year, our campaign goal is to raise $20,000. If each family made a gift of $25, we could easily exceed our goal! (You, of course, can give more.)

NO amount is too small, as anything we raise directly benefits the students of DSA. Please consider making a donation to help to ensure that current and future students have a great experience at DSA. There are two ways to make your tax-deductible donation:

  • Make a donation online at http://www.dsaptsa.com/

  • Send a check payable to DSA PTSA and mail it to the school:

400 N. Duke St.
Durham, NC 27701

  • Congratulations to the Middle School Girls Cross-Country team for earning their first win of the season against Rogers-Herr Middle School, Lowes-Grove Middle School, Lucas Middle School, and The School for Creative Studies. The final scoring between DSA, Rogers-Herr, and Lowes-Grove was 30-36-61. It was a good rematch against Rogers-Herr after finishing 2nd to them at the beginning of the season. Nine out of ten girls achieved new personal best times, while one girl ran a new season best time. For the third time in a row, Cassidy Besch led the way for the Lady Bulldogs with a 1st place finish and a new season-best time of 12:26 for the 2-mile distance. Sixth-grade rookies Harper Hegele and Lidia Smokoski had huge breakthrough performances with their 5th and 6th-place finishes. Harper broke 17 minutes for the first time with a new personal best of 14:41, while Lidia broke 16 minutes for the first time with a new personal best of 14:42. Sixth-grader Emmerson Roberts finished in 8th place with a new personal best of 15:00. Another huge breakthrough performance came from Lizabeth Lorduy, who rounded out the final scoring for the Lady Bulldogs with her 10th-place finish. Lizabeth broke 17 minutes for the first time with a new personal best of 15:13.

Charlotte Belcher, Anne Thomas, Adelle Bolch, Rose Magher, and Miles Marie Chua represented the Lady Bulldogs well with their athletic performances. Charlotte ran a new personal best of 15:26. Anne broke 17 minutes for the first time with a new personal best of 15:37. Adelle and Rose broke 20 minutes for the first time with new personal bests of 17:16 and 18:00. Miles finished strong with a new personal best of 18:04.

Volunteering

Note in the Pocket is a non-profit based in Durham and Raleigh. They have provided high-quality wardrobes to children and their families in need in the area for over 10 years. Note in the Pocket offers a relaxed, air-conditioned environment year-round for volunteers. There are several ways for students to get involved for those who need service hours or who are looking to give back. Students can come in for a volunteer shift where they will assist in sorting through donations, fold and label wardrobe items, or many other tasks around the facility. Students need to be age 16 and up to volunteer without a chaperone. Students can also run clothing drives to generate donations for Note in the Pocket.

If students are passionate about Note in the Pocket’s mission and want to commit more time to participating, they can apply for Teen Board. In this program, students will work with Note in the Pocket’s leadership on various projects to gain hands-on leadership development experience, guided by mentors that provide insight into the functions and demands of running a nonprofit organization.

Volunteer shifts run from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturdays. Clothing drives can be done on students' own time. Teen Board accepts applications each summer for a year-round program.

For volunteering, sign up for a shift here, or contact Stephanie Schaben at Stephanie@noteinthepocket.org. For clothing drives, contact Karol Turner at karol@noteinthepocket.org, and for the Teen Board, contact Kristina Isaac at kristina@noteinthepocket.org.
